What Happens After You Hang Up

The call ends with a town, a nearest main road and a description of the failure, and that is enough for the dispatcher to decide which truck comes and what is already aboard it. If the failure is a torsion spring, a cable, a roller set or a common opener board, nothing has to be ordered and the visit is a single trip. If it is a section in a discontinued colour or an obsolete board for an older unit, we say so on the phone rather than discovering it in your driveway.

The technician's first move on arrival is always the same, whatever the homeowner suspects. He pulls the red release handle to disconnect the opener and lifts the door by hand. A correctly counterbalanced door stops and holds at about waist height. One that drops, climbs or fights is telling him the springs are wrong for its weight, and every other symptom in that garage is downstream of it. That single test is what stops a healthy opener being replaced because it had spent years lifting a door that was too heavy for it.

From there he walks the whole system rather than the one part that failed: both springs, both cables and their drums, the rollers and hinges, the rail for straightness, the safety eyes for alignment, and the bottom seal. You are shown whatever gave out, in your hand, before it is replaced. The door is balance-tested again before the truck leaves. If something is worn but not urgent, you are told that it is worn but not urgent.
